WHAT IS A GICLEE?
A giclee (zhee-CLAY) is an individually produced, high-resolution, high-fidelity reproduction done on a special large format printer. Giclees are produced from digital scans of original paintings done by Phil. Giclees are superior to traditional lithography in several ways - the colors are brighter, last longer and are so high-resolution that they are virtually continuous tone, rather than tiny dots. The gamut of color for giclees is far beyond that of lithography and details are crisper. Giclees use very sophisticated inkjet technology. The process employs six colors of lightfast, pigmented inks and finer more numerous and replaceable printheads resulting in a wider color gamut. The ink is sprayed onto the page, actually mixing the color on the page to create true shades and hues. This printing process is the latest in printing technology. The pigmented inks have a life expectancy of over l50 years.

SIZE OF GICLEES
My giclees are available on paper in printed image sizes of 5 x 7, 8 x 12, 14 x 18, and 22 x 30. My giclees on canvas generally are not printed smaller than 3’ x 4’. In most cases the customer can determine the size of the final piece of art as long as it is somewhat proportionate to the original. The size limitation in one direction is 4’ and limited in the other direction only by the dimension of the original.

EMBELLISHING OF GICLEES
More often than not Phil’s giclees on canvas are highly embellished. Colors can be altered and/or palette knife work can be added even if the original piece did not have heavy texture to further enhance the giclee to give the appearance of an original. Each giclee is varnished just as are all the originals, so that the very permanent inks are sealed in and have UV protection.

PRICING OF GICLEES
The price of a canvas giclee is determined by size and the amount of time given to embellishing the piece. A highly embellished giclee roughly the same size as the original is about l/3 the price of the original.
